The styles of meditation we practice…

Meditation: (N.) a deliberate training that awakens us beyond the conditioned mind and habitual thinking, and reveals the true nature of reality.

Mindfulness

A form of awareness practice, which allows us to become intimate with the present moment.

Follow the breath in one of three areas: nose, chest, or stomach.

Can “count” the breath or use a focusing phrase (i.e. “in, out,” “rise, fall”).

May include variations like sound awareness, body scans, or mindfulness of thoughts and emotions.

Metta

Also known as “Loving Kindness.”

A compassion/heart-opening practice.

Directing kindness to yourself, loved ones, neutral people, difficult people, and eventually, all beings everywhere.

Repeat each phrase with as much sincerity as possible.

Mantra

A form of focus/concentration meditation.

Mantras are chosen for vibrational quality, rather than meaning.

Allow the mantra to naturally relax the mind.

In practice, allow the mantra to flow naturally and easily -- “as if you're listening for it, rather than repeating it.”

Nidra

Also known as yogic sleep meditation.

Move through a visualization that will support you in deep relaxation.

Lay down with props (blankets, pillows, comfy room temperature) to support the body in letting go as you transition to a liminal state right between asleep and awake.
